1891 All above clearly Thomas SHORT 10 B’ham
SHORT but transcribed Mary A SHORT 7 B’ham
as THORP on Ancestry Minnie SHORT 7 B’ham

The places of birth of Mary Ann & Alexander are the same. The 1901 family cannot be found in this form in any other census. There is no known Alfred SHORT b. around 1864/5. Missing sections from free BMD causes problems with identification. Crucially, freeBMD records b. Mar Q 1898 Sidney Howard V SHORT. These must be the same families, but why the big differences? An enumerator at the end of a bad night? Hannah Lydia SHORT b. Aston Mar Q 1885 may be both Hannah and Fanny L. Margaret Gertrude b. Dec Q 1886 Aston (Acton on Free BMD) must be both Margarette & Gertrude. Thomas could be the Frederick Thomas b. reg. Dec Q 1890. Mary Ann may be the one b. reg. Sep Q 1893. Minnie is likely to be Minnie Beatrice b. reg. Mar Q 1896 - thus 4 years old at 1901 Cen, not 7.

Children will be temp. rec. (pending 1911 cen. published 2011/2) as follows:
Alexander SHORT b. 1882/3 Yardley
Hannah Lydia (or Fanny L) SHORT b.1885/6 Aston, Birmingham
Margaret Gertrude SHORT b. 1886 Aston, Birmingham
Sidney Howard V SHORT b. 1887/8 Aston, Birmingham
Thomas (or ?Frederick Thomas?) SHORT b. 1890/91 Birmingham
Mary A SHORT b. 1893-95 Birmingham
Minnie (?Minnie Beatrice?) SHORT b. abt. 1896 Birmingham

Eliza ABBOTT

In the 1851 census for Birmingham the only Emma SHORT I can find who is the right age for our Emma is given thus: (Census Ref. 2061/213/50)
Little Francis St. Aston
Head, Joseph ABBOTT, aged 31, Pearl Button Maker born Birmingham, Warks.
Wife, Mary Ann, aged 22 born Birmingham, Warwickshire
Daughter, Eliza, aged 1 born Birmingham, Warwickshire
Visitor, Emma SHORT, aged 16. born Birmingham, Warwickshire
So it appears that Emma was staying with her sister, Mary Ann ABBOTT on the night of the census.
This census was taken in April of 1851. Little Francis St. ran between Great Lister Street and Lupin St. It was just round the corner from Bloomsbury
