Maureen's notes:
All Emma Green's family emigrated to Australia except possibly Bert Green & family. Frank & Stanley (& possibly Cyril) quarrelled with their father and therefore changed their surnames to Hill. I met Maud, Gertie & Stan at the house he was building in Slack's Creek, Queensland, Australia in 1965. I did not get much conversation with Maud & Gertie as Stan never stopped talking. He thought he knew everything. He wrote a letter to Granddad saying I was 'lily-livered' for not staying to live in Australia, so I wrote back and told him off.
I met Joan & family in Sydney in 1965 but they were about to move. I've lost their address. They seemed nice people.

George BRADLEY

b. around 1829 Newbury, Berkshire.
Parents unknown but mother possibly a servant girl named BRADLEY and father a gardener called PACE or PEACE but George showed father as Taplin BRADLEY

Emma SHORT b. 10 Nov 1834, Aston, Birmingham 1861 Cen. Living at 9 Eden Place, 49 Guildford Street, Aston St Georges, Birmingham with wife and children Emma Catherine & Eliza Ann. Occupation: Paper Maker 1871 Cen. Living ‘dwelling’ 21 Walsall Road, Aston Manor, Birmingham with wife and children Emma Catherine, Eliza Ann, Clara & George. Occupation: Paper Mache Maker 23 April 1880 deserted wife and emigrated to Australia with son George and ‘perhaps’ his ‘mistress’ and her daughter, arriving 23 Jul 1880.
The story of George BRADLEY’s marriage to Emma SHORTs, their separation and his life in Australia can be found after this table 1891 Cen. son George BRADLEY is back in England, has married and has a child but father George has not been traced. Did he return at the same time as his son, or later? ptnr(2) bef. 1901, Amelia ?PERRY? 1901 Cen. George BRADLEY at 23 Upper Ryland Road, Edgbaston & Harborne with Amelia listed as ‘SHORT, wife’ and living with three children: Alice PERRY described as daughter, ?Victoria? PERRY aged 2 shown as daughter-in-law, and three-month old John T PERRY described as son-in-law. This suggests that the older child is Amelia’s and the younger two are children of George BRADLEY & Amelia but that they are not married d. 19 Dec 1906, 23 Upper Ryland Road, Edgbaston & Harborne

Emma SHORT

Emma first appears in records m the 1841 census for Price Street in the district of St. Mary's. This census was taken in June 1841. I found this entry on 1841, Birmingham 4+, HO 107/1143 for House 2, Court 15, Price St. (Price Street seems to have run between Loveday St. and Lancaster Street more or less where St. Chad's Ringway now runs at the back of the Dental Hospital. St.Mary's Church was built as an annexe of St. Martin's from l779 onwards: elegant Georgian terraces once surrounded it. It became a Parish C'hurch in the 1830s but fell into decline and was eventually demolished. Price Street did not contain elegant Georgian houses but rather the smelly, insanitary courts ol back-to-back houses inhabited by the working classes of old Birmingham. In 1835 Price Street was on the northernmost edge of Birmingham.
1841, court 15, House 2. Price St.
William SHORT (Head), aged 40, Iron Caster, born Warwickshire
Mary Ann SHORT(Wife), aged 40 born outside the county.
Eliza SHORT (daughter), aged 15, born Warwickshire
Thomas SHORT (son), aged 15, born Warwickshire,
William SHORT(son), aged 10, born Warwickshire
Mary SHORT (daughter), aged 10, born Warwickshire
Emma SHORT (daughter), aged 6, born Warwickshire
James SHORT(son), aged 3, born Warwickshire
John SHORT (son), aged 1, born Warwickshire

In the 1851 census for Birmingham the only Emma SHORT I can find who is the right age for our Emma is given thus: (Census Ref. 2061/213/50)
Little Francis St. Aston
Head, Joseph ABBOTT, aged 31, Pearl Button Maker born Birmingham, Warks.
Wife, Mary Ann, aged 22 born Birmingham, Warwickshire
Daughter, Eliza, aged 1 born Birmingham, Warwickshire
Visitor, Emma SHORT, aged 16. born Birmingham, Warwickshire
So it appears that Emma was staying with her sister, Mary Ann ABBOTT on the night of the census.
This census was taken in April of 1851. Little Francis St. ran between Great Lister Street and Lupin St. It was just round the corner from Bloomsbury

1861 Cen. Living at 9 Eden Place, 49 Guildford Street, Aston St Georges, Birmingham with husband and children Emma Catherine & Eliza Ann. George’s occupation: Paper Maker
1871 Cen. Living dwelling 21 Walsall Road, Aston Manor, Birmingham with husband and children Emma Catherine, Eliza Ann, Clara & George. George’s (sen) occupation: Paper Mache Maker
