Notes

Jesse CARPENTER

Linked to John Carpenter as he was in Wales at 1905 and Phil Clements thinks he was son of John and not brother of Francis.
Known to be at this address in 1905.

Was a border during 1881 census with Francis. Given age is 22. (KF Presumed he is brother no known to be nephew)
for 1881 census details see Francis Carpenter
Jessie CARPENTER U 22 M Somerset, England
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Collier

KF thinks this Jesse is son of John C who lived at 140 Ynyswen Road and died in 1923. This is in conflict with father John's details as Phil Clements has him dying in Midsomer Norton & KF has him dying in Treorchy Cemetery. KF has created two John's on PAF file. One dying 3.11.1923 other is the one shown in this link. They may be one & the same person.

Palmer's Index to The Times 1878 Police --- Frater, Oliver, for Attempted Suicide 15 May 1878 (Page 14 col a)
At the MANSION-HOUSE, yesterday, OLIVER FRATER, a painter, residing at Holloway, was charged with attempting to commit suicide. Mr Edward Byron Shephard, jun., of 65 Great Tower-street, said that on Monday evening, about 6 o'clock, he saw the prisoner jump over the parapet of London-bridge on to the outer ledge. Two men came forward and prevented him going any further. Witness thought he had been drinking, but that he was not drunk and gave him in charge. The prisoner said he wished he had done it and walked quietly away with the constable. Replying to the Lord Mayor, the prisoner said he was intoxicated at the time and had been drinking all the day. He was now very sorry for what he had done. Police-constable Betts deposed that the prisoner was given into his custody by the previous witness, and said on the way to the police-station that he should have "done it" if he had not been prevented, and that the first chance he had he should avail himself of it, he not being able to provide for his wife and family. He was drunk. His wife was with him at the time. The wife, addressing the Lord Mayor, said she had three children and expected to be confined every hour. The prisoner was a painter, and was a very good husband, but he had been drinking since the previous Sunday. They had had no quarrel. He had been at work, but got drinking. Eventually, at the wife's solicitation, the Lord Mayor discharged the prisoner.

From Karren Warren email 6/10.203
Private Fred Frater, S.R.6821, 4th Middlesex, 8th Brigade, 3rd Division. He disembarked in France on 3/12/1914. His number suggests that he was in a reinforcement draft. He would probably have been stationed in the Kemmel sector, at Locre on the 4th January 1915, and in the trenches around Vierstraat on the 5th. They were rested when out of the line at Scerpenberg, Locre and LaClyette. On the day that Fred was killed, there were three other casualties, two ommemorated on the Menin Gate, and one buried at La Laiterie M.C. Kemmel.

Fred's number indicates that he was a member of the Special Reserve, (formerly The Militia.) He would have received six months training, but remain in civilian life on part pay, liable for recall in time of War.

Locality: Ieper, West-Vlaanderen
Visiting Information: The Panel Numbers quoted at the end of each entry relate to the panels dedicated to the Regiment served with. In some instances where a casualty is recorded as attached to another Regiment, his name may alternatively appear within their Regimental Panels. Please refer to the on-site Memorial Register Introduction to determine the alternative panel numbers if you do not find the name within the quoted Panels. The design of this site makes access to certain parts of the memorial impossible by wheelchair. For further information regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on telephone number 01628 507200.
Location Information: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.
Historical Information: The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, when a small British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence. There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by Commonwealth forces to divert German attention from a weakened French front further south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which began at the end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele. The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort by the Allies in September. The battles of the Ypres Salient claimed many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites. The site of the Menin Gate was chosen because of the hundreds of thousands of men who passed through it on their way to the battlefields. It commemorates those of all Commonwealth nations (except New Zealand) who died in the Salient, in the case of United Kingdom casualties before 16 August 1917. Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after that date are named on the memorial at Tyne Cot, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war. Other New Zealand casualties are commemorated on memorials at Buttes New British Cemetery and Messines Ridge British Cemetery. The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer in July 1927.

The link of James b1819 to James son of James b Polmont d. 1855 Glasgow was provided by Edward Charles research. This may have come from family stories or family documents that he had. Edward C would certainly have been able to get stories from his Grandfather William (James's son) as he lived until 1938. William may have talked about James (his father)'s family in Scotland. This is certainly feasible.

James also lived in 6 Charlotte Street during the 1871 census.

Believed to have found a link in Knightsbridge. Contacted Mike WELCH to discuss possible link. Both his Welch and Titchiner families were in the printing business as was James FRATER. The locale and dates match and so there is a possibility. Mike suggests that there is a possibility that Sarah Ann is the daughter of John Welch. KF has contacted St Paul's, Wilton Place to see where the Parish Records are kept to check the records. Am awaiting a reply.

Is Sarah working in another Household in 1881 but the family surname is mis-translated? or is the entry below correct?

Possible birth from IGI. Only one with father John:
Sarah Ann WELCH b: 31 Aug 1826 c: 24 Sept 1826 St James, Westminster, London to John WELCH and Sarah

David Charles FRATER

married first wife at age of 26 at Llandyry Church on 11/9/1943 parish
of Pembrey
married Joyce at age of 33 on 11/7/1950 at Registry Office, Llanelli

He was in the army during the war and was part of the forces that fought in St Malo in France during WWII. He was also one of the soldiers who were charged with escorting "aliens" on the Arandora Star. This ship was sunk on July 2nd 1940. It took place north- west of Malin Head when the one-time flag ship of the Blue Star Line, the Arandora Star, was torpedoed and sank, with the loss of 682 lives out of a total of 1,571 on board.
The ship was torpedoed by submarine U47 captained by Kapitaanleutnan Gunther Prien. This disaster affected my father far more than he was willing to say. I remember him talking about it only the once when he spoke of having to go around cutting the floating the buoys of dead soldiers and others so that the bodies would sink to a grave rather than be floating food for the fish. He had a dislike of the sea ever since. He spoke of the sadness of what they had to do in the rounding up of many people with links to Italy and Germany for no other reason than that. They were links. But during that time, in war, they had no way of knowing who may be sympathisers with the enemy and who were not. The regret was more because he knew Italain and and Italian descent people, and whilst he couldn't believe that they were anything but loyal to the country they lived in, he undestood the orders that were given. He also spoke of having to have "words" with some of the way they spoke to the "aliens." He was still a Sergeant at that time (one of many - as "bing one of the boys" he also kept being demoted!!) and so could comment to the soldiers of lower rank.
I believe that survivors were brought ashore in Scotland (possibly Greenock on the Clyde). Photos were taken which were then used in the press. My father used to boast that this was the one and only time he was on the front page of a national newspaper. My mother told me that the first the family knew about where my father was, was when they saw his picture in the newspaper. This paper was lost over the years and I have yet to locate a copy of it.

Edward FRATER

died age 68
The story of Edward Frater is that he is the son of Oliver Frater. The story passed to KF from his father DCF is that Edward was born in London of a Scottish Family. The family was split up when he was young and EF went "into care". The story from Edward Frater (the son of this Edward Frater) is that Edward was born in Scotland, came to London with his family when young. The parents died and Edward went into care..

KF has been searching the England & Wales indexes along with the Scottish indexes for Edward Frater. The Scottish index was search +/- 10 years. Only one Edward was found born and has a correspondaning death certificate in the following year.

The English/Welsh indexes were searched +/- 2 years. One Edward was found in 1889. The estimated year of birth. He is born to Oliver Frater which matches. No record can be found of the family in the 1891 census and Edward doesn't show on the 1901 census with Oliver & Ellen. Was the family split up? Oliver was known to be poor having attempted to commit suicide in 1878 because he couldn't keep his family (nee Oliver's notes). There is now good certainty that Edward (father of David Charles) is the same Edward born from Oliver in Islington in 1889.

Search required to find out where he grew up?

Birth certificate of Edward Frater is shown as son of Oliver Frater & Ellen Frater, formerly BUTLER, Father's occupation: House Painter, signature was X the mark of Ellen Frater Mother, 9 Andover Gardens, Islington. Signed 23 December 1889, Registrar: C R Butcher

Andover Gardens seems to be something like a Tenement block in Andover Road. All references in The Times have the address "X Andover Gardens, Andover Road". Believed to be bombed in the WWII they were still there in 1944 as The Times 5 Feb 1944 Pg 10 Iss 49772 col E has Nos. 9 & 10 Andover Gardens due for sale by Auction on Feb 24th.

Leonard FRATER

Fusilier 14200801 6th Bn., Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers

died Monday, 29th November 1943 Age 20 during Second World War in Italian offensive

Cemetery: SANGRO RIVER WAR CEMETERY, Italy
Grave Reference: VIII. E. 12.
Location: The Sangro River War Cemetery lies in the Contrada Sentinelle in the Commune of Torino di Sangro, Province of Chieti. Take the autostrada A14 exit at Val di Sangro. At about 2.5 kilometres from the exit turn right onto the SS16, Pescara to Vasto road, for nearly 2 kilometres. There is then a sharp right turn up to cemetery. Within the cemetery will be found the Sangro River Cremation Memorial. This is one of three memorials erected in Italy to officers and men of the Indian Army who were cremated - the other two cremation memorials are in Forli Indian Army War Cemetery and Rimini Gurkha War Cemetery. Historical Information: The site of Sangro River War Cemetery was selected by the 5th Corps. Into it were concentrated the graves of men who lost their lives in the fierce fighting on the Adriatic sector of the front in November-December 1943, and during the subsequent static period there. The 8th Indian Division was on this sector during these months; the 4th Indian Division arrived in January 1944, and the 10th Indian Division in April 1944. There are therefore many muslim burials in the cemetery, in plots VI, VII, XIII and XVIII; and the cemetery contains one of the three cremation memorials in Italy (the others being in Forli Indian Army War Cemetery and in Rimini Gurkha War Cemetery). The New Zealand Division also suffered heavily in the fighting for and beyond the Sangro River, and many of their graves are here. The Canadians have their own cemetery not far off, at Moro River. Sangro River War Cemetery contains, besides the graves of those who died in battle or of wounds, those of quite a number of British prisoners of war who escaped and died either of exposure or otherwise while trying to reach the British lines. There are now 2,500, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, nearly 100 are unidentified.
