34. Janet ("Jessie") GALLOWAY

On the Galloway side I have incorporated the birth dates of all George Galloway's children. These were discovered by Norman Carpenter in the Galloway Family Bible which I believe he saw at Ronald Galloway's house, 74 Miskin Street, Treherbert when he visited there on 21 July 1966.
All the Scottish Galloways were born at Hatton Burn Farm and all christened at Balgedie Presbyterian Church.

Originally Janet & Jessie were thought of as 2 different children. NLC's document on 1979 based on the Bible seen in 1966 state that Janet and Jessie were one and the same person.
She is shown in the 1841 census data of Portmoak (3 months) and in the 1851 census of Orwell (age 10). She is not believed to have travelled to Wales with the family. Could she have gone into service? or died. There is a Janet on the 1861 census of Kinneswood (age 16) with a Stewart Galloway (age 60). I do not know if they are Grandfather/Grand-daughter. If so they could be linked to George & Agnes.

Rev Stewart GALLOWAY

Email from Local Studies dept at Dundee Library

Dear Kerry Frater,
Thank you for your email enquiry, which has been forwarded to Local History,
Dundee Central Library by David Kett.

The Rev. Stewart Galloway died on 4th April 1909. Local newspapers, The
Dundee Advertiser and The Weekly News carried obituary notices, with
photographs, detailing his life and career. The Dundee Advertiser also carried
a marriage announcement for Rev Galloway and Rachel Mary Cram on Friday 28th
October, 1898.
.
Photocopies of the above, as well as a photocopy of Logie Parish Church, can be
sent to you on receipt of your full postal address. There would be a charge of
£2 to cover copying costs, cheque to be made payable to Dundee City Council.

I hope this information is of assistance to your research.

Maureen Reid
Library and Information Assistant

Could this be Morrison and not Thomson?

Mary, Jean, Christian & John show parents as Stewart Galloway and Janet (Morrison?)

A Stewart Galloway and Janet Thomson is shown on the LDS Family Search as the parents of George Galloway born 13 Jun 1814. Probably the same George who went to S. Wales. It also shows a Mary (b. 8.8.1801), Jean (b. 1.4.1804), Christian (b. 7.10.1810) and John (b. 25.9.1825) also children of a Stewart Galloway and Janet Thomson.

The 1851 Census of Registration District 463 Enumeration District 4, Page 30, Entry 117 showing George Galloway & Agnes (Barclay) has on the pervious page 29 a John Galloway (married to Mary Ann). This could be the brother of George as shown in the LDS details.

Second Presumption :---:
The John of Stewart & Janet is on Page 29 Entry 116

KF revised the birth year to 1854 based on her age on interment and e-mail to/from Robyn Tester (16.11.2002)
RT believes the birth date is between 21.6.1853 and 20.6.1854. If this is correct and KF's Grandmother's birthday book of dates is correct (giving Jane's birthday as 27 Oct) then she would have been born on 27 Oct 1853.

In 1875 Francis is listed in Warrals Directory of South Wales as a Butcher in Treherbert as is George GALLOWAY. Did he work with George? Did George try to take his son-in-law into his business or is this how he met Jane? He obviously didn't last as this is his only known entry into the local business directories.

Notes from Evon:
I have a copy of Rachel's death certificate and it shows her parents to be George Galloway and Agnes and George was a butcher. They were married in Parish Church,Treherbert, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan, Wales on 11th December 1871.
It was always known in our family that Samson married Rachel and had 7 children with him before she died, aged 33 of a blocked bowel duct. Samson then apparently sent back to Wales for Agnes, Rachel's sister, to help him look after the children and she came over and they married in Newcastle, NSW, Australia on 21 March 1887. They had 4 more children, only 2 of whom survived.
