Seved on board HMS Patroclus. Service number P/MX64323. Commeorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial (Panel3 column 10)
The Patroclus was sunk by a torpedo from U99, captained by the greatest of all U-boat captains Otto Kretshmer, off the coast of Northern Ireland. U99 had torpedoed SS Casanare. The Patroclus, an armed merchantman went on the attack dropping depth charges. The captain of the Patroclus decided, against advice from his Executive Officer, to stop and pick up survivors, which was against Admiralty orders. The U99 attacked and after firing two torpedoes at the Patroclus he broke off the attack as he was under attack from a Sunderland flying boat. He dived and when he levelled off he found the Patroclus still afloat. The flying boat had gone and so he surfaced and sunk the Patroclus with another 3 torpedoes. 76 were killed and there were 230 survivors.

123. Edward FRATER

died age 68
The story of Edward Frater is that he is the son of Oliver Frater. The story passed to KF from his father DCF is that Edward was born in London of a Scottish Family. The family was split up when he was young and EF went "into care". The story from Edward Frater (the son of this Edward Frater) is that Edward was born in Scotland, came to London with his family when young. The parents died and Edward went into care.. The actual birth and tracing of Edward's birth, care and movement to Wales is now proven and documented from records in London & Leicester.

Birth certificate of Edward Frater is shown as son of Oliver Frater & Ellen Frater, formerly BUTLER, Father's occupation: House Painter, signature was X the mark of Ellen Frater Mother, 9 Andover Gardens, Islington. Signed 23 December 1889, Registrar: C R Butcher

Andover Gardens seems to be something like a Tenement block in Andover Road. All references in The Times have the address "X Andover Gardens, Andover Road". Believed to be bombed in the WWII they were still there in 1944 as The Times 5 Feb 1944 Pg 10 Iss 49772 col E has Nos. 9 & 10 Andover Gardens due for sale by Auction on Feb 24th.

202. Leonard FRATER

Fusilier 14200801 6th Bn., Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers

died Monday, 29th November 1943 Age 20 during Second World War in Italian offensive

Cemetery: SANGRO RIVER WAR CEMETERY, Italy
Grave Reference: VIII. E. 12.
Location: The Sangro River War Cemetery lies in the Contrada Sentinelle in the Commune of Torino di Sangro, Province of Chieti. Take the autostrada A14 exit at Val di Sangro. At about 2.5 kilometres from the exit turn right onto the SS16, Pescara to Vasto road, for nearly 2 kilometres. There is then a sharp right turn up to cemetery. Within the cemetery will be found the Sangro River Cremation Memorial. This is one of three memorials erected in Italy to officers and men of the Indian Army who were cremated - the other two cremation memorials are in Forli Indian Army War Cemetery and Rimini Gurkha War Cemetery. Historical Information: The site of Sangro River War Cemetery was selected by the 5th Corps. Into it were concentrated the graves of men who lost their lives in the fierce fighting on the Adriatic sector of the front in November-December 1943, and during the subsequent static period there. The 8th Indian Division was on this sector during these months; the 4th Indian Division arrived in January 1944, and the 10th Indian Division in April 1944. There are therefore many muslim burials in the cemetery, in plots VI, VII, XIII and XVIII; and the cemetery contains one of the three cremation memorials in Italy (the others being in Forli Indian Army War Cemetery and in Rimini Gurkha War Cemetery). The New Zealand Division also suffered heavily in the fighting for and beyond the Sangro River, and many of their graves are here. The Canadians have their own cemetery not far off, at Moro River. Sangro River War Cemetery contains, besides the graves of those who died in battle or of wounds, those of quite a number of British prisoners of war who escaped and died either of exposure or otherwise while trying to reach the British lines. There are now 2,500, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, nearly 100 are unidentified.

Arthur and Roma lived in Adelaide where they owned a shop. I believe Arthur was a harsh man. I never saw him.
