Grandfather of Linda."John FRATER (b1890) was their youngest son and my grandfather. He had no contact with my grandmother after 1922 and was said to have "gone to America and remarried". Research has shown he was a British Merchant seaman, 1939 records give his address as West 19th Street, New York. I found his death in Liverpool (1945), with address given as 11 Washington St. Liverpool. " - from Linda

My grandfather, John (Jack) Frater born 1890, served with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers during WW1 before joining the merchant navy in 1922. I found all his early voyages into New York listed on the Ellis Island site where he is described as "5' 10'' and 164 lbs". John left the navy in 1944 and died in Liverpool in1945.
