They appear in 1861 census at Inveresk, George a blacksmith, living as lodgers (no children). I can't find them in 1871, I suspect George died in 1867

George Frater b abt 1832, definitely died in 1867. Died 28th July 1867 in St Cuthberts Poorhouse, Edinburgh, from 'disease of liver and kidneys, long'. Age 35 years. Informant was Elizabeth Waugh, of Kitchens Court, 175 Cowgate. She seems to have reverted to her maiden name, also in 1871 census.

They seem to have moved to Lambeth, London very promptly. They appear in 1861 census at 14 Oakley Street, Lambeth, Adam's occupation difficult to read but looks something like 'Iron Turner'. (or possibly tinner). They have one son, Henry F Wightman age 9 months. FreeBMD has birth of Henry Frater Wightman in Lambeth 1860 Q2 ref 1d 270, then death in 1864 Q3 ref 1d 178. Also on FreeBMD are birth of Edmund Wightman (who appears with Alison in 1871 census in Edinburgh) in Lambeth 1862 Q4 ref 1d 266 and Mary Wightman 1864 Q2 ref 1d 278. An Adam Wightman died in St Giles, Edinburgh in 1866 (age 34), but I have not viewed details. Margaret Alison Wightman was born in Edinburgh St Giles in 1867, but again I have not viewed details. I don't know what happened to the family after the 1871 census, but I did find Edmund in 1881, he was an ordinary seaman on vessel 'Kate' at Durham.

The trade directory shows the shop FRATER & JOHNSTONE to be at 47 Dumbarton Road. It is possible that they lived above the shop which had a different address. More details of the road would be needed to work this one out. I would expect that Margaret (nee CRAW) had a “Picture & Artist Colour Shop”. The 1891 census shows also shows her on her own. Further checking shows that Henry died in 1888. It seems from the 1891 census that his wife took over the shop.

She may have moved out, married and moved, died or simply be away.I only have modern maps of Glasgow. Provided the road names of today are the same roads as in 1901 and the numbering hasn’t changed then there is just over 10 miles distance between the two addresses

Margaret FRATER reported to the school that her address in the academic year 1893/1894 they had moved to 181 North Street (where the Mitchell Library now is). The 1901 census shows that the family are still there but without Margaret FRATER. So Margaret could have moved after finishing at the RGI and before the 1901 census.

Henry junior is still living at Glasgow in 1901 - occupation carver and gilder - looks as though he died in 1945.

Henry junior also had a son Henry who was born in 1900.

******
Thank you for your email regarding Margaret Frater. Margaret Frater appears in our student registers from 1889/90 – 1895/6. She was 16 when she first enrolled at the School in 1889 and her address is given as 44 Dumbarton Road. However, in 1893/4 she moves to 181 North Street. The entries for the last 2 years of her time at GSA list her occupation as ‘saleswoman’.
The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, 1861-1989: a dictionary of exhibitors at annual exhibitions of the Royal Glasgow Institute by Roger Billcliffe lists Margaret Frater as exhibiting a work called 'Chrysanthemums' in 1893. Her address is given as 44 Dumbarton Road and so this appears to be the same person as the GSA student above.
