NB No trades are given for daughters Elizabeth and Lily as they probably helped out in the pub. Henry has become a bit younger on this census. Lily was named 'Leah' on the earlier census; the name was probably dropped as too Jewish or not liked.

William Sowerby Dudley Ward ENSELL

Note from Nigel Scott-Moncrieff
William married Harriet Clarke - at least, Harriet was his third 'wife' but no trace of a marriage certificate can be found and family tradition suggests that he never married her. There is a Harriet Clarke designated as 'servant' in the 1851 census, but on Henry's birth certificate, she is the mother 'Harriet Ensell nee Clarke'

William was a hopeless gambler and claimed to be the 1st cousin of Lord Ward, Earl of Dudley - hence his flamboyant name which was his own doing later in life. There is a plausible theory that he was the illegitimate son of the said Lord by his mother Elizabeth 'Betsy' Gwinnett who was employed in the good Lord's household at the time of William's conception. Fanciful? possibly, but it is a fondly held family tradition!!!
