In 1861, Cwmsaerbren was separated from the ten households at Tyla Coch by just four households, one at Ynyswen and three at Nanteris. Emailed from request to lookup details of Tylacoch Farm where George was believed to be Bailiff
"You mention that George GALLOWAY was at Tyla Coch in 1854. That year Ann MORGAN owned Tylacoch Farm."

The birthdate and parentage of George is based on data provided by Linda. This is from her research and copies of the 1841 & 1851 census data. The 1851 census data is of "Orwell" whilst the 1841 data is from the Parish of Portmoak

The St John the Baptist register of marriage shows George Galloway married on 14.1.1861 to Elizabeth Gordon had a father "Stewart" and a widower. Elizabeth is shown as a Widow and was living in Scotland at the time of the marriage. So George was still in contact in Scotland and both George & Elizabeth signed the marriage certificate, so we can presume he could read and write and may have "sent" for another wife. Since this happened with two of his own daughters (Agnes going to Australia to replace Rachel upon her death) Elizabeth may have been related to Agnes - It is possible.

Evon Williams (Australia) lists his birth place as Markinch, Fife, Scotland with a birth date of 13 June 1813. Robyn Tester (Australia) believes it to be 13 June 1813 (baptism) and 26.5.1813 (birth) at Portmoak.

David GALLOWAY

Taken from the Family research carried out by Norman Leonard CARPENTER and "written up" in 1979
The boy is NOT given in the Galloway Family at Cwmsaerbren in the 1861 census
It may be safely presumed that he was in Elizabeth HENDERSON's [formerly GORDON, spr] scottish home before she was widowed, and re-married George GALLOWAY , widower in 1861.
He could be a HENDERSON child, so would be George GALLOWAY's step-son.
Alternatively, he could be a natural son of George GALLOWAY's before his mother re-married. In support of this is the following
Visit 21 July 1966, 74 Miskin Street, Treherbert
Ronald Galloway and his wife Bayne (nee DAVIES) stated that "Dai GALLOWAY" (or 'Dai Butsen' as sometimes called) came back in khaki on a visit to the Rhondda. [post - 1989 or Boer War?], and certainly had the true GALLOWAY features.
At 74 Miskin Street a large GALLOWAY Family Bible was shown recording many entries of Births, Marriages, Deaths

Neither Emma or Mary could be found in 1881 census. There is a David as Boarder (married without wife there) in Barrow in Furness.

At register General, St Catherine's House, 10 Kingsway, London search of Deaths Index Volumes 1880 to 1973, inclusive, no trace found of David GALLOWAY's death having been registered in England & Wales. Probably returned in late life to Scotland. Or even like his half-brother Stewart Galloway also went & died in the USA

Elizabeth GALLOWAY

email from Glamorgan mailing list group re: church inscription.

You might like to know that, in the interior of the church of St. John the Baptist, Ystradyfodwg, there is a memorial stone to Elizabeth GALLAWAY (sic), the daughter of George and Elizabeth GALLAWAY, who died at the age of 8 years on 31st. July 1870.
Elizabeth, the daughter of George and Elizabeth, who died on 31st. July 1870 was buried at the church of St. John the Baptist on 3rd. August 1870. The abode was given as Treherbert.

The 1894 description of MI's in St John the Baptist lists Elizabeth GALLOWAY's headstone.

Stewart GALLOWAY

John Bridgeman has him born 1785 (20.6.2004)

Mary, Jean, Christian & John show parents as Stewart Galloway and Janet (Morrison?)

A Stewart Galloway and Janet Thomson is shown on the LDS Family Search as the parents of George Galloway born 13 Jun 1814. Probably the same George who went to S. Wales. It also shows a Mary (b. 8.8.1801), Jean (b. 1.4.1804), Christian (b. 7.10.1810) and John (b. 25.9.1825) also children of a Stewart Galloway and Janet Thomson.

The 1851 Census of Registration District 463 Enumeration District 4, Page 30, Entry 117 showing George Galloway & Agnes (Barclay) has on the pervious page 29 a John Galloway (married to Mary Ann). This could be the brother of George as shown in the LDS details.

Joy has provided a reference from the Mormon page for details and from the 1813 Register of Baptisms it states:
George lawful son of Stewart GALLOWAY and Janet MORISON was born the 26 May and Bapt. 13 June"
Also believes that Stewart was born in 1785.

Interestingly the GORDON family are living next door to Stewart. Is this the same GORDON family that produced Elizabeth GORDON b 1861 and second wife to George - Stewart's son.

Janet MORISON

Could this be Morison and not Thomson?

Mary, Jean, Christian & John show parents as Stewart Galloway and Janet (Morison?)

A Stewart Galloway and Janet Thomson is shown on the LDS Family Search as the parents of George Galloway born 13 Jun 1813. Probably the same George who went to S. Wales. It also shows a Mary (b. 8.8.1801), Jean (b. 1.4.1804), Christian (b. 7.10.1810) and John (b. 25.9.1825) also children of a Stewart Galloway and Janet Morison.

It is now believed that the LDS entry of THOMSON is mis-transcribed. The writing (so I have been told) is flowery and could easly be read as Morison (based on other names and letters written on the same page).

The 1851 Census of Registration District 463 Enumeration District 4, Page 30, Entry 117 showing George Galloway & Agnes (Barclay) has on the pervious page 29 a John Galloway (married to Mary Ann). This could be the brother of George as shown in the LDS details.

Consensus now agrees that the name is Morison. If the marriage is correct and in Portmoak then Janet is most likely to be from the area. IGI has 2 two possibilities on their index

This would be odd and I would expect the first child to be Alexander or Margaret. Why? Because husband Steart's parents are also supposed to be Alexander & Margaret.

Notes from Evon:
I have a copy of Rachel's death certificate and it shows her parents to be George Galloway and Agnes and George was a butcher. They were married in Parish Church,Treherbert, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan, Wales on 11th December 1871.
It was always known in our family that Samson married Rachel and had 7 children with him before she died, aged 33 of a blocked bowel duct. Samson then apparently sent back to Wales for Agnes, Rachel's sister, to help him look after the children and she came over and they married in Newcastle, NSW, Australia on 21 March 1887. They had 4 more children, only 2 of whom survived.

Janet ("Jessie") GALLOWAY

On the Galloway side I have incorporated the birth dates of all George Galloway's children. These were discovered by Norman Carpenter in the Galloway Family Bible which I believe he saw at Ronald Galloway's house, 74 Miskin Street, Treherbert when he visited there on 21 July 1966.
All the Scottish Galloways were born at Hatton Burn Farm and all christened at Balgedie Presbyterian Church.

Originally Janet & Jessie were thought of as 2 different children. NLC's document on 1979 based on the Bible seen in 1966 state that Janet and Jessie were one and the same person.
She is shown in the 1841 census data of Portmoak (3 months) and in the 1851 census of Orwell (age 10). She is not believed to have travelled to Wales with the family. Could she have gone into service? or died. There is a Janet on the 1861 census of Kinneswood (age 16) with a Stewart Galloway (age 60). I do not know if they are Grandfather/Grand-daughter. If so they could be linked to George & Agnes.
