DEATH COMES TO THE LLANERCH
On February 6th 1890 at about 08.30 a.m., There was an ignition in the Cooke's Meadow Vein slope that was to have a devastating impact upon the mine and the community nearby. MR. JOSEPH MORGAN was the manager and the mine was owned by the Ebbw Vale Co., but sub-let to Partridge John & Co. It was 255 yards deep.
A pumping engine at pit bottom was overthrown, its attendant JOHN DOWNES and the hitcher JOHN BEARD near to him were both brought out alive. JOHN BEARD, however, minus one leg. Both died later.

The inquest was held al Pontypool town hall when THOMAS WILLIAMS, a local coal merchant was the jury foreman. It was revealed that for the past 30 years the mine had becn worked by naked lights, and MR. EDWARD JONES, J.P., of Snatchwood, Managing Director of the Company and the holder of an under manager's certificate. said he thought it a perfectly safe practice.
His company had recently installed modern ventilating gear that had increased the available supply of air underground by a factor of 5. No one could be held blameworthy was the opinion of the jury.
176 died.
